Oblique House

Oblique House is a residence located in a forest in the south of the Netherlands that seems to have sprung up out of a lush environment. Designed by Niels Maier in collaboration with Ruimtemakers, the house is a modernist spectacle composed of three box-like volumes to reflect the three different functions of the house. The architectural team's goal was to create a minimal, warm and luxurious home, and they set a precedent for a new era of Dutch housing.

The main volume on the ground floor includes an open-plan living, dining and kitchen area, as well as the master suite in an anthracite grey brick structure. The second volume, made from Accoyo wood from the Netherlands, includes a "shadow kitchen", storage area, laundry and ironing room. On the upper level are two bedrooms for the children and a junior bathroom. "Oblique House reflects the family nest, creating a unique, timeless look," said Niels Maier. "Carefully selected materials, patterns and textures work together to create an appealing building."

Niels Maier's design for a semi-timber House in the mountains of Limburg in the south of the Netherlands is inspired by raw handmade elements and crafted elements, and Rough House witnesses the process of making it and celebrates it in a raw and rustic way. Niels Maier set out from a historically sensitive place, with minimalism as a starting point, to work on the recent revival and to create a house that beautifully captures its past.

Niels Maier shines a light on the artisan, expressing techniques in both the selection of materials and their composition to create a home that feels deliberate and considered, and crafted by hand. Warmth and texture are key drivers for each of the spaces, layering in ceramic, metal, timber and plaster elements that all have their own unique sense of movement and tactility, further animating the home.
